Cornelis is een Brabander uit Drunen. In de crisisjaren gaat hij op zoek naar werk in Duitsland. Hier ontmoet hij Trien van den Berg die vanauit Groningen ook op zoek is naar werk. Ze trouwen in Viersen. Wat hen naar Nederland terug drijft is niet duidelijk, maar wellicht is het uitbreken van de eerste wereldoorlog (28 juli 1914) hier debet aan. Zij vestigen zich in Groningen.

Cor is na de oorlog (?) gescheiden van Trien.

s gewijzigd in Boterdiep 53 en omvat het bedrijf: fabrikatie van sukerwerken en engros- en detailhandel in chocolade en suikerwerken. In november 1936 openen Cor en Trien een filiaal (winkel) aan de Oosterweg 19 in Groningen. Het adresboek van 1950-1951 meldt: C.M. v.d. Berg aan de Oosterweg 46, winkelierster en C. van Weert aan de Haverkampsdrift 7 (Boterdiep), fabrikant. Waarschijnlijk zijn zij dan al gescheiden. Op 14 sep 1951 wordt zijn faillissement uitgesproken.
