Zoon van koning Lodewijk IV van Duitsland en Margretha; hij was tevensgraaf Willem III van Henegouwen en hertog Willem I van Beieren; hij huwde 02.1352 met Mathilde (dochter van graafHendrik van Lancaster); hij werd in 1357 krankzinnig en liet de regering over aan zijn broer Albrecht van Beieren.
