Zoon Jan Pruijsten kon goed overweg met de pedalen. Twintig jaar oud stierf de jonge Bergenaar in de oorlog, als lid van het Regiment Wielrijders.
Hij is een geamputeerd oorlogsslachtoffer, gewond geraakt op 13 mei 1940 en gestorven op 31 mei 1940 nadat Duitse artsen Pruijsten een been en een arm hebben afgezet, om hem te redden.
Het verhaal achter die naam begint op 16 februari 1920 als Jan geboren wordt op het adres Koestraat 73 als derde kind van Anton Pruijsten en Petronella Van Groesen. Jan toont al vroeg belangstelling voor sport en cultuur. Hij volgt teken- en schilderlessen en leert een muziekinstrument bespelen: een vioolciter. Hij krijgt les van een Duitser die in Nederland muziekinstrumenten verkoopt en die tijdelijk in het pension van Piet Gooijaers aan de Venestraat woont. Jan wordt lid van het ensemble Kwinta dat zelfs nog voor de radio optreedt. Doorleren is er voor Jan niet bij, er moet brood op de plank komen. Na de lagere school gaat hij aan het werk als decorateur bij de in 1935 opgerichte Aardewerkfabriek Geertruidenberg N.V. aan de Zuidwal 35. Het bewijs dat Jan daar gewerkt heeft, is een door hem gedecoreerde vaas die zijn broer Thijs in 2005 aan het museum De Roos in Geertruidenberg schonk. Jan voetbalt ook, als lid van Right-oh. En als wielrenner rijdt hij menige koers.
In 1939 moet Jan zich melden voor de militaire dienstplicht. Hij wordt als loteling nummer 21 aangewezen. Jan vindt het verschrikkelijk en komt huilend thuis. Hij heeft op dat moment een jaar verkering met Toos Joore uit Raamsdonk. Jan komt terecht bij het Regiment Wielrijders. Na de Duitse inval wordt hij ingezet bij de strijd om het Eiland van Dordrecht waar neergelaten Duitse parachutisten groepjes Nederlandse militairen bevechten. Jan Pruijsten ligt op 13 mei met zijn compagnie in stelling aan de Zeedijk bij Dubbeldam als Duitse Stuka’s een luchtaanval beginnen. Vervolgens beginnen Duitse tanks op te rukken. In de kale polders is weinig dekking. Rond half zeven in de ochtend wordt Jan getroffen door mitrailleurvuur van een Duitse tank. Zijn kameraden vluchten en laten hem en andere zwaargewonden achter. Duitse soldaten geven hem drinken en bieden eerste hulp. Hij wordt naar het Zuiderziekenhuis in Rotterdam gebracht. Bij een bezoek barst zijn vader in woede uit als hij ziet hoe Jan een arm en een been is afgezet. Zelf is Jan, ondanks schotwonden in arm en rug opgewekt en zegt: „Als ik opgeknapt ben, ga ik naar Engeland.”
Het mag niet zo zijn. Jan overlijdt op 31 mei 1940. Hij werd begraven in de eretuin tegen de westelijke muur van de begraafplaats in Geertruidenberg.
