Geertruida is een dochter van Tjitze Kooistra en Neeltje Katsma, In 1906 verloor zij op zevenjarige leeftijd haar moeder aan tuberculose. Haar vader hertrouwde een jaar later met Willemke Postma. Geertruida is toen gaan wonen bij een broer en zus van haar grootmoeder, Geertruida Lollinga, nl. Feike en Antje Lollinga te Burum A. 129. Feike komt 3 Mei 1903 te overlijden. Na het huwelijk van Geertruida komt Antje bij Marten en Geertruida inwonen en blijft daar tot haar overlijden op 26 Maart 1921.
