Notes about Jacob Mantel

Toen Jacob 2,5 maand oud was trouwde zijn ouders. In de huwelijksakte erkent zijn vader Simon hem als zijn zoon, waardoor Jacob de achternaam Mantel krijgt. Jacob zelf trouwde als 26-jarige veldarbeider te Vianen met de 6 jaar jongere zwangere Marigje. Na iets meer dan een maand wordt hun zoon Simon geboren. Halverwege het jaar 1920 verhuis het gezin van Vianen naar Emmerich am Rhein (Duitsland). Hier worden de andere 5 kinderen geboren. Jacob gaat daar werken bij Oelwerke Germania, eendoor de Nederlandse boterfamilie Jurgens opgericht bedrijf voor de verharding van vetten (margarine). Later is dit bedrijf opgegaan in het wel bekende Unilever.
Tijdens de 2e Wereldoorlog wordt Emmerich regelmatig door de geallieerde gebombardeerd. Bij het zwaarste bombardement op 7 oktober 1944 wordt het huis van het gezin Mantel aan de Muhlenberg zwaar getroffen. Marigje krijgt van de autoriteiten toestemming om met haar jongste 4 kinderen en het ondertussen geboren eerste kleinkind te verhuizen naar Magdenburg. De oudste 2 kinderen woonde niet meer thuis. Jacob blijft vanwege zijn werk in Emmerich.
Na de oorlog vertrok het gezin naar Amsterdam, waar ze eerst een paar maanden inwoonde bij een zus van Marigje (familie Spanjer-Blokland) en halverwege september 1946 een eigen woning toegewezen kregen aan de Tugelaweg. Vooral in de eersten jaren na de oorlog had de familie het niet breed. Zo kregen ze voor de inrichting van het appartement van oudste zoon een aantal tweedehands meubels. In een brief van 2 maart 1947 schrijft Jacob aan zijn zoon Simon: "Nu beste zoon Mama en ik wij waren zeer ontaard want daar hadden wij heelemaal niet mee gerekend, dat onzen huiskamer zoo plotseling gevuld zou worden. Alle die het meubelment zien zeggen dat het prachtig is. Die kast wordt zo gouw mogelijk gemaakt." De betreffende kast is nog steeds in de familie.
De grootste hobby van Jacob was stamboomonderzoek, of zoals hij het noemde sibbelkunde. Tijdens de 2e Wereldoorlog schreef hij vanuit Emmerich brieven naar o.a. de gemeente Enkhuizen en Andijk en vroeg dan uittreksels uit de Burgerlijke Stand op. Later heeft hij deze chronologisch in zijn registers verwerkt (zie voorbeeld). Toen Jacob gepensioneerd was ging hij regelmatig naar het archief in Alkmaar om daar de aktes zelf te zien en over te schrijven in het door hem zelf aangeleerde handschrift. Zijn archief is een bron geweest voor het opzetten van deze stamboom.Source 4
