Edwin James Townsend
Although Edwin James never married and left no descendants, I will put him here because of the material available concerning his death. He was the eldest of the six children who migrated with Captain Townsend on the ill-fated "Netherby" in 1866.
Brisbane Courier, 3 June 1895.
The late Mr E. Townsend. News has been received by telegram of the death of Mr. Edwin Townsend at the Coen River, Cape York Peninsula. Mr Townsend was a son of the late Captian of Sandgate, and for many years served in the Native Police Force in North Queensland, usually occupying pioneer stations. The smart young officer of eitheen or twenty years ago will be remembered by many firends with most kindly feelings. Mr Edwin Townsend was one the reckless, cheerful, and thoroughly good-hearted men who opened up the wildernesses of the far North, and a conspicious feature in his character was that in hard and dagerous duty he never speared himself. He was a brother of Mr. George Townsend, also formerly of the Native Plice, and now of the Immigration Department in Brisbane.
