    In 1712 behoorde Petrus geboorteplaats Echt onder het overkwartier van het hertogdom Gelre, en vanaf 1713 werd Echt samen met enkele andere gemeenten onder Staats-Opper-Gelre van den Verenigde Provinciën onderverdeeld. Tijdens Petrus zijn (voor die tijd) lang leven van 78 jaar, zijn er rampzalige componenten geweest die hem en Maria zeker niet zijn ontgaan. Zoals beschreven bij zijn oudere broer Lambertus woedde er veel oorlogen tussen 1640 en 1740, en de soldaten verspreidde veel ziekten. Voor de mens de pokken, buikloop, pest en cholera. Maar ook veeziekten. Drie grote vee pestepidemieën van 1714 tot 1741, 1746 tot 1768 en van 1771 tot 1781 teisterde de plattelandsbevolking. Tussen 1713 en 1789 kwamen dertien keer misoogsten voor. Van Petrus en Maria haalde maar liefst 8 kinderen geen volwassen leeftijd. Geen wonder ergens onder zulke leefomstandigheden, al is niet zeker dat ze van het platteland kwamen. Maar ook in dichter bevolkte gebieden, zoals Echt, Susteren en Sittard was het klimaat onveilig. Veel achtergebleven soldaten klonterde samen om te stelen en plunderen. Het is ergens opvallend dat Petrus en Maria nog zo oud konden worden.
