Door paus Hadrianus I tot koning van Aquitanië gezalfd Rome Pasen (154)-781; na de dood ,van zijn oudere broers Karel en Pippijn door zijn vader tot keizer gekroond en als mederegent aangesteld Aken 11.9.813; alleenheerser 28.1.814; doet zich door paus Stephanus IV opnieuw tot keizer kronen Reims 28.10.816; ontwerpt in Aken juli 817 een regeling van de toekomstige verdeling van zijn rijk (Ordinatio Imperii) welke hij echter in 829 wijzigt ten gunste van de uit zijn tweede huwelijk geboren zoon Karel hetgeen tot een reeks burgeroorlogen leidt; tot afstand gedwongen Çompiègne okt. 833 doch door zijn jongere zoons hersteld Saint-Denis 1.3.834; dit bevestigd door hernieuwde kroning Metz 28.2.835.
Had in ca. 793 een verhouding met een onbekende vrouw.
Voorts had Lodewijk tussen 851 en 853 een relatie met een onbekende vrouw.
