LEON D. DEWAELSCHE, 85 ROCKFORD - Leon D. DeWaelsche, 85, of Rockford went to be with the Lord at 6:57 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007, in OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. Born May 30, 1922, in Moline, the son of Triffin and Maria (De-Voller) DeWaelsche. Leon obtained his master's degree in economics from Drake University. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army/Air Force, retiring in 1967. Married Helen M. Motes on April 18, 1947, in Moline. Employed as fiscal manager by Catholic Community Service for 13 years, retiring in 1987. Member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Senior Y Men's Club. He was an avid golfer and bowler. Survivors include daughter, Kristina (Roger) Gabreal of Oak Harbor, Wash.; son, Daniel (Patti) DeWaelsche of Tacoma, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Predeceased by wife, Helen of 51 years in 1998. Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, in Holy Family Catholic Church, with visitation from 10 a.m. to time of service; the Rev. Andrew Hougan will officiate. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the church.
