Als machinezetter werkte hij eerst in zijn geboortestad Maastricht. Later, rond 1928, trad hij in dienst bij het Limburgs Dagblad te Heerlen tot ca 1942 toen de krant op last van de Duitse bezetter werd opgeheven. Hierdoor werd Dolf als oud-militair bedreigd met krijgsgevangenschap. Hij wist hieraan te ontkomen door van beroep te veranderen. Hij trad in dienst bij het AZM (Alg. Ziekenfonds voor de Mijnstreek) alwaar hij in 1961met invaliditeitspensioen ging.
