Hij werd geboren als tiende kind , zijn moeder overleed kort na zijn geboorte. Een aantal van de kleinere kinderen werd ondergebracht bij familie. Dat was zo geregeld in de wet .Hij kwam als 1 jarig kind bij een zuster van zijn vader Maria Hendrika Aartsen en haar man Martinus van der Pol. Daar groeide hij op , maar het contact tussen hem en zijn familie ,zijn broers en zussen bleef bestaan. Jij groeide op op met zijn oudere nichten Anna en Gerritje. Zij woonden in Schaarsbergen bij Arnhem. De familie was erg blij met de komst het kleine kind
