Christian left Switzerland with a group of 363 Mennonites under the direction of Benedict Brackbill to escape religious persecution. They left Mannheim, Germany in the summer of 1717 and arrived in America on 24 August 1717 by boat in Philadelphia with three sons. His association with Benedict Brackbill has led some researchers to speculate that his wife was the daughter of Benedict. There is no proof of this.
