Kort na hun huwelijk vertrokken Dirk en Hillegonda naar Zuid Afrika aan boord van het schip de "Pampas". Zij arriveerden in de Tafelbaai op 13 mei 1691. Jan Kotze ging in 1698 naar Europa om zaken te regelen en ging in 1701 terug naar Zuid Afrika In augustus van het daarop volgende jaar overleed HILLEGONDA.
Maar ook Hillegonda was in Mei 1701 samen met haar man Jan Kotze (Johannes Cotzen) in Amsterdam om getuigen bij de doop bij het kindje van haar zus Elisabeth Boone(n) en haar man Johannes (Jan) Jansz. Appel.
