Hy word 'n burgher in 1697. Hy trou in 1706 met ''Maria Mouton''. Sy was gebore c 1690 in Middelburg, Zeeland, die vyfde kind van ''Jacques Mouton'' en ''Maria de Villiers''. ''Maria de Villiers'' het gesterwe en Jacques trou 8 Oktober 1700 met ''Francina Bevernagie''. ''Maria Mouton'' het dus haar tuisland verloor, asook haar moeder. 'n Mens wonder watter verhouding sy met haar familie gehad het, want sy het later 'n bose daad gepleeg.
:: Hy kry toestemming in 1706 om die plaas ''Bartolomeusklip'' in Agter-Groenveld aan te lê. Maar hy kry die erfbrief eers 28 Augustus 1714, agt maande na sy dood. Hulle het ook 'n plaas gehad in die vier-en-twintig riviere.
:: Volgens Maria het Jooste haar sleg behandel, sy het geen nuwe klere gekry vam hom gekry nie. Jooste is vermoor op 3 Januarie 1714 deur sy vrou ''Maria Mouton'' en twee slawe, ''Titus van Bengale'' en ''Fortuin van Angola''. Maria het vir drie jare 'n seksuele verhouding met die slaaf Titus gehad, voordat haar man vermoor was. Die lyk van Jooste was in 'n ystervarkgat gestop. Die twee slawe se vonnise was dat 'n stok op hulle agterend op gedruk was en dan so op die paal sit. Nadat hulle gesterwe het was hulle in stukke gesny, as 'n waarskuwing vir andere. Maria Mouton married Frans Joosten and they farmed in the Twenty-four Rivers area. In 1714 Joosten was brutally murdered by Maria and her slave lover, Titus Bengale. The two of them had a sexual relationship for three years. Titus and his accomplice, Fortuijn of Angola, received the sentence of being impaled and after their death their heads were to be cut of and displayed on poles for the others to see on the highway. Whereas Maria was bound to a pole and strangled. Sentenced to be half strangled, scourged and strangled to death for the murder of her husband wherein she was assisted by Titus of Bengal. Sentence probably carried out on 03-09-1714. Husband was Franz Joost - Source P Holden.Document 54 of 56 ; DEPOT: Genealogical Society of SA ; DESCRIPTION No Name, T. 17140903 Extracts from Precis of the Archives of the Cape of Good Hope. Journal 1652-1732. SUMMARY Titus No Name of Bengal. Died 03-09-1714 about midday. Empaled until dead, thereafter his right hand and his head to be cut off and fixed onto a pole beyond the limits of his master's property. He took 48 hours to die in this manner. Executed for the murder of his master at the instigation of Maria Mouton.1 September 1714Maria Mouton, of Middelburg in Zealand, 24 years old, murders her husband with the assistance of her paramour the slave Titus of Bengal.
She is sentenced to be half strangled, after that to be scorched, & after that strangled unto death.
Titus to be empaled & to remain so, until death. After that his head & right hand are to be cut off & fixed on a pole, beyond the limits of his late master's property.
Fortuin, an accomplice, is also to have his right hand cut off, & without receiving the coup de grâce, is to be broken on the wheel. After that he is to be placed on a grating until death takes place. After that his head is to be cut off, & with his hand placed on a pole, together with the head & hand of Titus.
After that the bodies are to be taken to the outside place of execution, & there left exposed to the air & the vultures [purportedly called `strontvogels` by the Cape indigenes].
The property of the woman is to be divided as follows: A half of the half for the plaintiff, & the other half for the Orphan Chamber. Costs beforehand to be deducted ...
