John Mure of Rowallan is the son of Robert Mure of Rowallan and his wife Margaret Newton.

According to Sir William Mure of Rowallan's Historie, John Mure of Rowallan: "deceast befor Robert his fayr 1501." Historie, page 74 The editor of the Historie printed a document which corrected this, showing that John Mure of Rowallan died before 7 September 1495. Ibidem, Note D. on pp. 114-15
