Notes about Josephus Augustus Calvin

My name is John Calvin Peters, Jr. and I am the gr.gr. gr. grandson of Robert Calvin and Juliana Briggs Calvin.......I made this connection through the rootsweb site! I knew of Robert Calvin and his wife, who I thought was named Julia.......you have done a great deal of work and are to be commended......are you the primary force behind this work? It would be a pleasure to hear from you. I live in Altoona, PA. My gr. gr. grandfather, Josephus Calvin, came here after the Civil War and settled in Hollidaysburg, PA. He had a brother named Gustavus who served with him in the same military unit. Best wishes!

Per the US Census of 1880, "Joseph A. Calvin" 's occupation was "Boss Machinist" and he and his family lived in Gaysport, Blair, PA

Dear John, Jr.

Marcia Briggs sent me a message indicating you wanted to get in communication with me regarding our mutual ancestors. Seems our "trees" join at the point where Juliana Briggs married Robert Calvin (probably emmigrated from Switzerland - my guess, without proof - I'm going purely by the names). Per my data, she was the sister of William Henry Briggs (my direct ancester) and daughter of Henry Briggs. They produced twin sons, Josephus and Adolphus. Robert Calvin died about three years after their marriage (I have no data as to cause) and she re-married (Nicholas Jacobs), when the twins were about seven years old.
Your communication indicates the twins served in the same unit during the Civil War and one of them, Josephus, moved to Hollidaysburg, PA after the war, from whom you are descended. Am I close? If so, have you any proven data you could share with me?

Glenn Briggs

Hi Glenn,

Sorry for the tardy reply.......yes, you are correct on your narrative....I have almost no info on Robert Calvin.....I think I can dig some things up in Western PA when I get the time. I did not know Josephus and Gustavus were twins? I knew Josephus was from Ohio or at least lived there for some time. I have some papers from his Civil War service and there is a plaque commemorating his unit in the soldiers and sailors memorial hall in Pittsburgh. I did not know he had a brother until recently...when I can get back to the hall, I will check to see if his brother was on the list also. The Calvin family was quite interesting....Josephus's daughter Ada lived 100 years and died in 1968. She wrote my great aunt a letter a few days before she died.....she had just won the bridge tournament at the Masonic Home in Elizabethtown. The handwriting is flawless and her mind was amazing. I can remember my grandmother and her two sisters traveling to the home to visit her on a regular basis......and they were all in their mid-late 70s at the time......they lived to 86, 90 & 94! I hope those genes are not too watered down!

Some day, I plan to go to the gravesites in Western PA........I understand Juliana's father is buried there as well....he must have lived with her in later years.

I really know nothing about the Briggs family, other than the fact that they are apparently among the early settlers to Plymouth colony.......I wonder why they came and what happened after they got here? Perhaps you could fill me in to some degree. Also, where do you live? I live in Altoona, PA.....our family has been here since Josephus Calvin came here immediately after the Civil War.

Best wishes,

John Peters
