Zoon van Popke (Sjoerds) Bakker (koopman, 5 juli 1853 Langweer, gemeente Doniawerstal – 25 november 1918 Buitenpost) en Dieuwke Althuisius (12 augustus 1855 Joure, gemeente Haskerland – 6 november 1935 gemeente Achtkarspelen). Huwde op 12 augustus 1927 met Cornelia Houtman (21 april 1901 Schiedam). Eigenaar Boek- en Handelsdrukkerij S.J.P. Bakker (uitgever en drukker). Gereformeerd. Van 1941 af drukte hij enorme hoeveelheden illegaal drukwerk: de bladen Vrij Nederland en Trouw, brochures, pamfletten en gedichten. Op 29 januari 1945 vond een inval in de drukkerij aan de Lijnbaansgracht 208-209 plaats. Uit het verhoor van een verzetsman was twee dagen eerder naar voren gekomen dat Trouw bij Bakker werd gedrukt. De Sicherheitspolizei arresteerde hem samen met zeven personeelsleden (vier typografen en drie kantoormedewerkers). Toen de Sipo de drukkerij nog aan het doorzoeken was, liep Wim Speelman (1*), oprichter en voorman van Trouw, het pand binnen. Hij werd herkend en eveneens opgepakt. Elf dagen later zijn Bakker en zijn werknemers Jan Overeem, Johan de Jonge, Gerrit Cornelis Stapel en Jacob Izaak de Haan samen met vijf anderen op de loswal van de Prins Hendrikkade in Zaandam gefusilleerd. Hiermee reageerde de bezetter op de liquidatie op 5 februari 1945 van onderluitenant Willemse van de Staatspolitie (2*). Bakkers bedrijf werd in beslag genomen. Zijn naam staat op een plaquette vlakbij de plaats van de fusillade. Ook twee zonen van zijn broer Miente kwamen door de oorlog om het leven. Sjoerd Bakker (3*) is op 1 juli 1943 in de duinen bij Overveen gefusilleerd, terwijl Popke Sjoerd Bakker (4*) op 7 mei 1945 op de Dam werd doodgeschoten.
