Op 12 jarige leeftijd is hij aan boord van de HD 108 gaan varen om net als vader te gaan vissen. Hij monsterde aan als "visschermans-knecht". Helaas vond er een aanvaring plaats met de HvH2 "Simon"17, waarbij Arie met een andere matroos omkwam. Verteld werd later dat de jongen zich, in zee liggend, vastklampte aan de schipper. Deze sloeg zich van hem los om niet zelf ten onder te gaan. Deze ongelukkige gebeurtenissen vonden plaats op de 23e augustus. Arie spoelde aan op het waddeneiland Terschelling en is daar formeel overleden verklaard per 7 september "op de Reede nabij Terschelling"18. Op de "Oude" begraafplaats vlakbij de Brandaris werd Arie begraven, rij nummer 17, graf nummer 30. Het graf is nadien hergebruikt en er staat nu een steen van een andere familie op.

 

 

Van het overlijden werd op de 12e september door de gemeente Terschelling akte opgemaakt. Vader Jacobus was daarbij als getuige aanwezig, samen met Maarten Post. (*1885) Maarten was een zoon van Jacobus tweede vrouw
