Hij werd in 1741 officieel afgezet en opgevolgd door http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elisabeth_van_Rusland">Elisabeth van Rusland. Alle leden van het gezin van Anna Leopoldovna werden gevangengenomen en brachten tot 1780 in gevangenschap door; velen stierven in gevangenschap. Omdat http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_VI_van_Rusland">Ivan er desalniettemin in slaagde vele machtige vrienden te verkrijgen, werd hij in 1756 apart opgesloten in fort http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sjlisselburg">Sjlisselburg, waar hij in 1764, volgens vooraf gegeven instructies, werd vermoord.
