He was made co-ruler with his half brother Peter I from 1682-1689 by his

sister Sophia, who acted as regent during that period (she actually ruled

Russia during those years). Mentally and physically weak, his affairs were

completely administered by Sophia. He became purely a figurehead in 1689 when

Sophia was overthrown.
