Notes about Elisabeth van York

Elizabeth van York (Westminster, 11 februari 1466 – Richmond Palace, 11 februari 1503) was de gemalin van koning Hendrik VII van Engeland, met wie ze in 1486 trouwde. Ze was de moeder van Hendrik VIII.

Elizabeth werd geboren in Westminster als het oudste kind van koning Eduard IV van Engeland en Elizabeth Woodville. Het gerucht ging dat haar oom, Richard III (die in 1483 na Eduards dood de troon besteeg), met haar zou trouwen zodra zijn zieke vrouw Anne Neville was overleden. Bewijs om zijn plan te staven is nooit gevonden, maar men gaat ervan uit dat Elizabeths moeder het gerucht verspreidde om haar dochter op de troon te helpen.

Op 22 augustus 1485 versloeg Hendrik Tudor koning Richard III tijdens de Slag bij Bosworth, waarop hij gekroond werd als koning Hendrik VII. Hoewel hij in Frankrijk had gezworen met Elizabeth te trouwen, stelde hij het huwelijk uit tot 18 januari 1486, drie maanden na zijn kroning. Hun eerste kind, Arthur, werd geboren op 20 september, en Elizabeth werd tot koningin gekroond op 20 november 1487. Uiteindelijk baarde Elizabeth zeven kinderen:

  • Margaretha (28 november 1489 - 18 oktober 1541)

  • Hendrik (28 juni 1491 – 28 januari 1547)

  • Elizabeth (2 juli 1492 – 14 september 1495)

  • Maria (18 maart 1496 – 25 juni 1533)

  • Edmund, Hertog van Somerset (21 februari 1499 – 19 juni 1500)

  • Catharina (2 februari 1503 – 2 februari 1503)

Haar oudste zoon, Arthur, stierf vlak na zijn huwelijk met Catharina van Aragon, de dochter van Ferdinand II van Aragon. Een paar dagen na de geboorte - en dood - van haar jongste dochter, Catharina, stierf Elizabeth op 37-jarige leeftijd. Hendrik VII liet haar bijzetten in de Westminster Abbey.

Er wordt verteld dat Elizabeth van York model is afgebeeld als de vier Vrouwen op Angelsaksische speelkaarten. Dit is onwaarschijnlijk, omdat Angelsaksische speelkaarten terug gaan op het beeld van Rouen, vanwaaruit speelkaarten in de middeleeuwen naar Groot-Brittannië werden geëxporteerd. Het feit dat deze Frans-Engelse speelkaartenhandel eind vijftiende eeuw een grote vlucht nam, ligt waarschijnlijk aan de basis van dit verhaal.
