Notes about Marten Jans Spoelstra

Marten Spoelstra was born in December 1822 in house number 37 of the country village Hallum in the utter northern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, municipality Ferwerderadeel, son of the 50 years old truck farmer (gardenier) Jan Klazes Spoelstra and the 35 years old laborer Grietje Martens Swart, who were very probably not married, because Jan Klazes Spoelstra recognized in the birth certificate (geboorteakte) that he was the father of Marten, who was named for his maternal grandfather, Marten Sjoerds Swart (1762-1816). His father Jan Klazes Spoelstra didn't sign the birth certificate because he wasn't capable to write.

Obeying a decrete of emperor Napoleon his father Jan Klases adopted on 22 January 1812 in his residence place Hallum the surname Spoelstra, a so-called metonymic occupation name, a surname that was derived from a product or tool which was distinctive for an occupation, in this case a spoel (= spool) for a weaver. So very probably Jan Klases was in January 1812 a weaver. He didn't sign the naamaannemingsakte (name adoption's deed) because he wasn't capable to write.

About 1840 Marten Jans Spoelstra was eliminated by lottery from serving for five years in the Dutch army.

On Thursday 30 December 1852 laborer Marten Jans Spoelstra, son of late Jan Klazes Spoelstra and laborer Grietje Martens Swart, married in the country village Ferwerd, seat of municipality Ferwerderadeel, at the age of 30 years to the five years younger Maaike Jans Streekstra, born in Hallum too, daughter of late Jan Pieters Streekstra and Albertje Harmens Vriesema.

They had in Hallum the following five children Spoelstra:
* Jan, born on 11 December 1852;
* Albertje, 18 November 1854, died on 5 September 1861 in Hallum;
* Pieter, 1 July 1857;
* Klaas, 22 November 1859;
* Albert, 23 September 1863.

Father Marten Spoelstra was in all those birth years a laborer.

Laborer Marten Jans Spoelstra died in March 1864 at the age of 41 years in house number 38 of his birth and residence place Hallum, municipality Ferwerderadeel, Friesland.

On Saturday 11 May 1867 his widow Maaike Jans Streekstra remarried in the country village Ferwerd at the age of 39 years to the six years older laborer Marten Sjoerds Swart, born in Hallum too, and had in Hallum son Sjoerd Martens Swart on 21 December 1867 and daughter Albertje Martens "Ella" Swart on 31 December 1869.

They all emigrated in 1881 and 1882 to the USA, including Maaike's and Marten's four sons.

In 1947 there were 1451 persons living in the Netherlands with the surname Spoelstra, 693 of them in the northern province Friesland.
