"TOGETHER THROUGH MOLDING HOBBY
BY NICHOLAS VERONICO
' You're not really living unless you have a hobby."
This challenge was volunteered by Garrett Bermema, 333 W. 111th as he and members of his family engaged In molding figures of balsa, soap, and clay. The hobby bench, usually the kitchen table, has been the place over which many a family problem and difference of opinion have been threshed out while large and little hands creayted miniature animals, Indian heads and book ends.
ends.
"One must have avenues of expression and a hobby provides all that is required,' added Bennema who is chief clerk of the steam power department at Wisconsin Steel works of International Harvester. "Hobbies tend to radiate no individual's personality and originality over whatever he is trying to do. Also, a creative hobby does much to keep a home together.
Hobby Began With Son
"Children especially need encouragement in whatever they do and my wife and I both agree that our Sunday afternoon hobby hour instils in them coöperation and responsibility." he said.
Mrs. Ada Meo Bennema, who taught piano for eight years at Calumet Conservatory of Music, told how the family became interested in its hobby.
One day in 1944 as she prepared an apple pie, her son, Alan Provls, now 11, traipsed in and asked for a nickel to buy a mold from a playmate so he, too, could make an Indian head. His interest in molds attracted his older sister, Carole Joy. They literally took over a portion of the basement where they worked clay, plaster of Paris, soap, and balsa Into Indian heads, bird and animal life, Santa Clauses, and chains.
Sales Pay for Bicycle
A gaily colored Santa standing about six inches high made a hit with the kiddles. Its demand before Christmas convinced the young Ben nema duo that it had a potential market. They went to work and sold enough St. Nicks at 50 cents apiece to buy a bicycle. Which youngster owned the bicycle was quickly solved; a generous uncle purchased another bike and peace was restored.
Since then the whole family, including 4 year old Paul, has worked together in making figurines for relatives and friends. The coloring is invariably done by the children who use water colors and shellac.
The children also are musically inclined, following the lead of their parents.
I have been playing church organs during the last 30 years," Bennema said. Carole and Alan play the piano, and Paul, who shows considerable enthusiasm for tennis, blows a recognizable simple tune on the mouth organ.
Couple Was Teacher and Pupill
A box advertisment on page 305 of the PullmanCommodore telephone directory reveals another interesting sideline of the talented Bennema. "Tuning, regulating, re pairing, and voicing of pianos and organs" the ad reads in part. He aspires to build his own pipe organ some day.
The Bennemas, married 14 years, became acquainted as pupil and teacher. As a young man Bennema gave 15 organ lessons to Ade Mae Provis who lived down the street at 333 W, 111th pl, where the two were to make their home.
"At first we kept the friendship strictly on a teacher-pupil basis" Bennema recalled. "She was just another pupil until a year later when we 'started talking'. We have been talking ever since.""
