Notes about Jacobus de Maet

Hij was de oudste zoon van Adriaan de Maet en Maria de Cock. Te Lamswaarde trad hij in het huwelijk met Anneke Peuleman (Peulman), weduwe van Pieter Leenknegt. Ze vestigden zich in 1748 op het landgoed Lettenburg nabij Kuitaart in Hontenisse, alwaar Jacobus Landman was. Lettenburg dateert reeds uit de 13e eeuw. In 1742 kocht de abt van Boudeloo de Oostvogel- en de Westvogelpolder met inbegrip van Ser Pauluspolder (Betsade) en Kruispoldersedijk voor 241 pond van de Gentse kasteelheer Hugo. De koop was een grote plas. De Voghelkreek doorstroomde het hele gebied. In Lettenburg (Wentelsee), Oliekot en Rozenberg konden de schippers aanleggen. Over Lettenburg is nog niet veel bekend, zomin als over het doel, waarvoor het oorspronkelijk gebouwd is. In de volksmond wordt het ook wel -de witte bollen- genoemd, dit naar aanleiding van de beide witte stenen ballen, die vroeger aan de ingang van de weg naar Lettenburg lagen. Tegenwoordig liggen ze langs weerszijden van de oprit naar het erf. Jacob de Maat oefende er indertijd het beroep van landman uit en had volgens de everingenboeken ruim 70 gemeten grond tot zijn bezittingen. In het jaar 1754 overleed zijn echtgenote en nog in december van datzelfde jaar trouwde hij Josina de Neijs. Als ook deze in het jaar 1756 overlijdt, trouwt hij in februari 1757 met Cornelia Kints. Vermoedelijk heeft hij tot de jaren 1760 -1761 op Lettenburg gewoond, dit kan worden afgeleidt doordat de kinderen die daarna nog geboren zijn, allen gedoopt worden in Boschkapelle. Jacobus was tevens landeigenaar op Pauluspolder.
