Notes about Joseph Austin Ewing

Married by Reverand Ernest L. Honts. Marriage registered in Kanawha County Clerk's Office, Book 13, Page 349. Joseph Austin Ewing was born August 7, 1923, at the home of his paternal grandparents at 921 Central Avenue in Charleston, West Virgina. He attended Stonewall Jackson High School but left after the eleventh grade to enlist in the Army. The year was 1940 and America had just entered World War II. He served as a tail gunner in the B-17 "Flying Fortress". After the war, he married Mary Elizabeth Butler, of Kanawaha City, West Virginia, at Calvery Baptist Church. In 1952 they moved to Cleveland, Ohio and Joe got a job as a welder for Thompson Products, which later became TRW. He worked there for several years while he studied to become a pipefitter. Joe worked for many years out of Pipefitter Local Union 120. He worked on many interesting assignments including steel mills, oil refineries, and he helped build the Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Lake County, Ohio. Joe retired in 1987. Joe always seemed to enjoy good physical health, rarely missing work because of illness. Joe was basically a shy person, usually quiet except when with family and close friends, but he would often stop at a neighborhood tavern after work. Probably sometime during the 1960's his family came to realize Joe was an alcoholic. Joe refused to admit this until he had to be hospitalized in the mid-1980's. He has been sober since that time and for year's after, regularly attended Alcoholic Anonomus meetings. In the early 1990's Joe was diagnosed to have Alzeheimers Disease.
