 Die bierbrouery het hy oorgeneem van sy skoonvader J.W. Hurter deur De Papenboom / De Brouwerij by Nuweland vir 110 000 gulde op 22.8.1785 te koop. Was ryk en voortuitstrewend. Het geld gemaak met die brouery en met verskeie vleiskontrakte. Was ook wynboer en veeboer met rasperde, Hollandse beeste en Spaanse wolskape (het lg. gekruis met Kaapse vetstertskape). Het op reis gegaan na die binneland op 25.3.1803 met goewerneur J.W. Janssens waar hy waardevolle dienste gelewer het as adviseur en onderhandelaar. As beloning hiervoor het hy 'n plaas ontvang - Paardeneiland aan die mond van die Soutrivier naby Kaapstad. Die ervarings van sy reis met goewerneur Janssens het hy opgeteken in 'n dagboek wat later uitgegee is: Die joernaal van Dirk Gysbert van Reenen, 1803. Redakteure W. Blommaert en J.A. Wiid; V.R.V. no. 18; Kaapstad, 1937. Hy het sewe kinders gehad, almal uit sy eerste huwelik met Aletta Catharina Hurter. Op 16.9.1804 is hy getroud met Johanna Catharina Cruywagen, die weduwee van Jacob Pieter Deneys

in 1783, DirkGijsbert van Reenen obtained a brewer’s license and set about trying to improve the quality of beer which was still largely reliant on using imported, dried hops. The most important factor in doing so was his decision to plant hops on his farm near Swellendam
