Jan Douma was mede firmant van de brandstofhandel Fa.Douma en Tammes te Groningen. Als oprichter van deze zaak begon hij als zelfstandige met het venten van turf. Aanvankelijk werd gebruik gemaakt van een handkar, later gevolgd door een paard en wagen en nog later , kort na WO II met vrachtauto's.
Jan Douma was belijdend lid van de Gereformeerede kerk vrijgemaakt en heeft een ambtsperiode gediend als ouderling in deze kerk. Tijdens deze dienstperiode werrd hij ziek en kon hij het ambt niet meer vervullen.
