Henry Ballinger, father of Joseph, gave his sons, Joseph, Josiah andHenry, 1200 A. of land in Salem, N.J. which they sold. They had joined agroup of Quakers headed by Alexander Ross, and Morgan Bryan in a plan tomove to the Shenandoah Valley of Va. - Joseph's royal grant is recordedin Goochland County, Va. Joseph began life as a Quaker, but as heconformed to the ways of Virginia planters, and bought slaves of his own,he clashed with the teachings of the Friends, and perhaps was disowned bythem. Joseph and his family became members of the established Church ofEngland; Joseph became a minister of the church and performed manymarriage ceremonies. Both of Joseph's sons, Joseph, Jr. and Capt.Richard were active in the support of the church.
