Notes about Marion J. Groover Dykstra

He was born Marion J. Dykstra on January 13 1902 in LaMoille, Marshall County, Iowa. His father is Charles Dykstra (1873-1943; farmer) and his mother is Mary Groover (1869-1902). They married on February 2, 1900 in LaMoille. His mother, MaryGroover died five days after the birth of Marion on January 18, 1902, 32 years old.

In the US Census of 1910 and 1920 we find Marion (grandson) in the household of his grandparents Eli Groover (1835-1922) and Elizabeth A. Groover (1848-1923) in Marshalltown. Apparently his grandparents raised their grandson. I suppose that Marion,as a tribute to his mother and grandparents, chose the surname Groover, because that is the name he used the rest of his life.

His father Charles (Chas) Dykstra (born as Tjeerd Dijkstra in Holland) remarried in 1903 Elizabeth Moes, also born in Holland.

On july 5, 1923 Marion Groover married in Black Hawk, Iowa Claire B. Kelson (1904). Her parents were Clerence Kelson and Margaret Wilson. Marion and Claire (Census 1930 and 1940) lived in Tama, Iowa. They had two sons: Douglas junior (1924-1996) andWallace Jean (FAG: 69097264; 1925-2000). Marion died in april 1968 in Toledo, Iowa.
