An illustrated magazine, "Peerless Union City," gives the following sketch of Horace A. CORBIN.

The eldest of a family of eleven children, he was born and reared among the hills of the Old Granite state. A hillside farm, plentifully besprinkled with rocks and stones, which had descended from grandsire to sire, taught the lad as soon as he was able to wield the hoe and spade, that life was real, life was earnest, and developed in him in after years that spirit of indomitable energy and perseverance which characterized all his efforts in whatever he undertook. Aside from the manual training which the old farm gave him, he turned to so good advantage the winter terms of school which New England boys were taught to appreciate, that these advantages with several months in a neighboring academy enabled him to teach country schools in winter, alternating with farm work in summer, until he was twenty-five years of age. He then went to Boston, and served apprenticeship in a dry-goods store for three years. Having obtained a good knowledge of the business, he acted upon Horace Greeley's advice. Selecting Union City as is objective point, where his sisters were married and settled, he lost no time in making his way thither, arriving in the spring of 1856. The next day after his arrival found him established as partner in a general store with his brother-in-law, Hiram Crissy. For twenty-seven years he was engaged in the dry-goods business in this city, only retiring from active life as failing health made it necessary. Mr. CORBIN carried the same energy and enthusiasm into his Church and Sunday-school relations that characterized him as a business man. For many years he served on the board of trustees for the Congregational Church, and for a period of fourteen years he was superintendent of the Sunday-school.

He was in many respects a model Sunday-school superintendent, drawing out he best efforts of others, as well as being most careful and painstaking himself. In regard to his business life it was said of him, "If ever an honest man was born, then Horace A. CORBIN was one. He d. January 14, 1896. Mrs. CORBIN and her daughter Jennie reside at Union City, Michigan."
