Hun huwelijk viel niet in goede aarde bij de protestanten. Jos Wessels schrijft hierover in "Nazareth: Breedevoort en zijn katholieken" op p. 36:
"Tenslotte klaagde de kerkeraad over een lidmaat van de Hervormde Gemeente, namelijk Gerhard van Hengel; deze was op 6 juli 1662 getrouwd met Lijsbeth Steenwegh 'bij de papen tott Swilbroeck', zonder attestatie. De kerkeraad had darop Van Hengel van het Avondmaal afgehouden. De kerkeraad vroeg aan de classis wat hem verder te doen stond. De classisvergadering bepaalde dat de zaak voor de heren van het Kwartier van Zutphen gebracht zou worden.
