      Op zondag 24 oktober 2010 is Maria Terpstra in haar huis in Amsterdam overleden. Maria was al lange tijd ziek. Zij was tot het laatst toe betrokken bij het leven en welzijn van de Papua's. Maria was actief bestuurslid van de Stichting AKAR, die zich bezighoudt met onderwijs aan Papuase kinderen uit het gebied van de Geelvinkbaai.

      Overlijdensbericht door de Stichting Akar: Op zondag 24 oktober 2010 is, alleen in haar huis in Amsterdam, overleden: Maria Terpstra, oud 79 jaar. Zij was al lange tijd ziek, maar ging slechts langzaam achteruit. Zij was tot het laatst toe betrokken bij het wel en wee van de Papoea's. Zij laat een lege plek achter bij familie, vrienden, veel Papoe-vrouwen en diverse stichtingen. Ook voor Stichting Akar was zij actief. Met - tot vorig jaar - veel daad en - tot 'gisteren' - goede raad stond zij ons bestuur vaak bij. Stichting Akar dankt haar daarvoor. Van Phia de Groot-Licher ontving ik nadere gegevens over het afscheid van Maria Terpstra: Maria Terpstra was onderwijzeres op Japen en in Genjem Gelegenheid tot afscheidnemen en condoleren op donderdag 28 oktober van 19.00 tot 19.45 in Uitvaartcentrum Zuid, Fred. Roeskestraat 91, Amsterdam. Het leven van Maria wordt herdacht op zaterdag 30 oktober om 14.30 uur in het crematorium De Nieuwe Ooster, Kruislaan 126, Amsterdam, waarna de crematie zal plaatsvinden. Aansluitend kan men elkaar ontmoeten in Grand Café Frankendaal, Middenweg 116, Amsterdam.
