Peter van den Born schrijft op p. 10 van zijn Bornboek dat er in Renkum naast onderschout Jacob Jans nog een (veel oudere) Jacob Jans met de achtervoeging "in de Maet" voorkomt. Omdat Peter verderop het vermoeden uitspreekt dat de naam "van den Born" niet uit het voorgeslacht van Jacob maar juist uit dat van zijn vrouw Neeltje Jacobs afkomstig is en dochter Jacomina Jacobs wanneer ze in Rotterdam trouwt met Arend van Ekelenburg de achtervoeging "ter Maet" gebruikt, is het zeker niet onmogelijk dat dat de oorspronkelijke naam van het voorgeslacht van Jacob Jans is.
