Jan Schaap was een zoon van Aart Schaap (geboren Den Ilp 12/10/1823) en Trijntje Bruijn (geboren Amsterdam 21/4/1823). Aart was visser en woonde aan het Gouw op nummer 12a.
Ook Jan was visser en woonde aan het Gouw op nummer 22. Jan was doopsgezind - een interessant gegeven, want vrijwel alle vissers uit Ilpendam, Den Ilp en Landsmeer bleken van doopsgezinde huize te zijn.
Jan´s vrouw Neeltje Hartog was gereformeerd opgevoed en het gevolg was dat alle dochters uit dit gezin gereformeerd werden gedoopt, terwijl alle zoons een doopsgezinde opvoeding kregen.
