NOTE: Constantius II, Flavius Julius (Sirmium 7 aug. 317 - Tarsus 3 nov. 361),oudste
2 CONC (wettige) zoon van Constantijn de Grote enFausta, werd bij deverdeling van het rijk in 338 keizer van Egypte en Romeins-Azië (waarvanhij al
2 CONC caesar, onderkeizer, was), het Balkanschiereiland en het uitersteoosten. Na de dood van zijn broers Constans en Constantijn II en vanMagnentius
2 CONC (die sedert 350 tegenkeizer van het westelijk rijksdeel was)werd hij in 353 alleenheerser. Zelf kinderloos stelde hij als caesar(335-360)
2 CONC in Gallië (Frankrijk) en Britannia Julianus aan. Toen in 359een (nieuwe) oorlog met de Perzen dreigde, wilde Constantius troepen
2 CONC aanJulianus onttrekken, maar het leger in Gallië protesteerde en riep decaesar tot augustus (opperkeizer) uit (360). Constantius trok hem in
2 CONC 361tegemoet, maar stierf onderweg in Cilicië; op zijn sterfbed zou hijJulianus als opvolger hebben erkend.
In de strijd tussen orthodoxie en arianisme steunde Constantiusaanvankelijk de
2 CONC middenpartij; later ging hij steeds meer in ariaanserichting en kreeg daardoor conflicten met Athanasius, patriarch vanAlexandrië.
2 CONC Aangezien hij zich 'stedehouder Gods op aarde' voelde,trachtte hij in oprechte devotie de concilies bruutweg tot kerkelijkeeenheid te
2 CONC dwingen. Hij wordt wel de eerste Byzantijnse keizer genoemd.
