Notes about Hugo Capet

NOTE: HUGO CAPET (ca. 941 - Melun 24 okt. 996), koning van Frankrijk van 987tot 996 stichter van het Huis der Capetingen, was een zoon van Hugo de Grote. Hij werd gekozen tegen de Karolingische medepretendenten in. Door zijn zoon Robert de Vrome tot opvolger aan te wijzen, verzekerde hij de continuïteit. Aanvankelijk moest Hugo het hoofd bieden aan de rebellie van Karel van Lotharingen, die als Karolinger aanspraak maakte op de kroon.In het kader van dit conflict poogde Hugo de naar de tegenpartij overgelopen bisschop Arnulf van Reims te vervangen door zijn eigen vriend Gerbert (de latere paus Silvester II); hij liet Arnulf door het Concilie van Verzy (17-18 juni 991) afzetten, maar moest zwichten voor het veto van paus Johannes XII en de Duitse bisschoppen. Intussen wist Capet in maart 991 Karel van Lotharingen definitief gevangen te zetten. In de tweede periode van zijn beleid bekampte Capet de opstandige vazal Odo van Chartres, die in 991 Melun innam.
