This began a thirty year career with the US Air Force which included over 200 combat missions; B26 Martin Marauder in World War II, B26 Douglas Invader in Korea and the B52 in Vietnam. He was a decorated veteran which included 2 distinguished flying crosses, 12 Air Medals, 6 Battle Stars, The Legion of Merit and numerous other campaign medals and citations. He retired as a Lt. Colonel in Merritt Island, Florida where he resided for 40 years. Joe continued to stay active with his many Air Force friends and served for many years as the President of the 306th Bomb Wing Reunion Assn. After retirement from the Air Force, he worked for Mutual of Omaha for nearly twenty years. Joe was active with Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Merritt Island and devoted 30 years in volunteer service in the American Red Cross. He enjoyed gardening, reading, fishing, traveling and most especially time with his family. A large part of Joe's life was devoted to young people, from coaching to leading and mentoring them. He was preceded in death by the love of his life "his bride" Mary Louise Demes.
He is survived by his son, Robert & Jane Demes of Gastonia NC, and daughters Linda and Vernon Myers of Palatka, FL, Mary Anne & Mike Gresham of Dallas, Texas and Helen Diane (DeeDee) Demes of Reston, Virginia, sixteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren, two sisters, Carol Pitts, Jacksonville, FL and Anne Dagosto, New York City and a number of nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Joe. He leaves behind a lifetime of loving Friends, who knew him as a gentle man who loved life and could be counted on for wise and compassionate counsel.
The family would also like to recognize the special people who cared for him in his time of need; his Putnam Caregivers Family and the professional staff at Hospice of the Nature Coast.
He will be interred next to 'his bride' in Arlington National cemetery at a date soon to be determined.
