TheTomb Yard mentioned intheabove will is a small yard surrounded by astonewall, inside of which is built a vault in which reststhe body ofGeneral Murray, a British officer, who was killed inthebattle at Germantown in 1777.At thattimetheBritish army had takeo possession ofJacobFunk's farm and took all his horses and his stockand otherwiseruined much of his property, and cleaned outtheplace so completely that he was obliged to buy a yoke of oxen to commence farming again, and in spite of his great reverses he again prospered very substantially. No indemnity was ever paid toJacob Funkfor these depredations, probably forthereason that he never asked for it.
Thereisanother bitof Revolutionaryhistory attached tothehistory ofJacob Funkwhile he was tbe pastor oftheMennonite church at Germantown in 1777. It was from behind a stonewall whichseparatedtheMennonite burying ground fromthemain street, while GeneralAgnew, a Britishgeneral, wasreturning fromthebattlejustbefore sunset aud riding down a steep hiilin front of themeeting house and turning his head, looking atthesilvery clouds just before sunset, that hewas fireduponby a half grown boy sitting behindthesaid wall.Theofficerwasmortally wounded and soon died and is buried inthe lower burying ground, now Hood's cemetery, Germantown.Thename oftheperpetrator was carefully guarded by those who knew. Hans Boyer, a half witted fellow of that day, claimedthecredit ofthedeed, but it is said have not rightfully belonged tohim.
