Bill joined the army on August 4, 1941. Newspaper report, October 28, 1961: TO OPEN HIS OWN SHOP Just over forty years ago a 12 year old boy started work at the fishmonger's shop at 80, High Street, Esher, now H. Howard and Son. Tomorrow, he and his wifeopen their own shop in Ashtead. He is Mr. W. Thompson, of 5, West End Gardens - an Esher resident all his life, and a well-known and popular figure in the locality. A keen gadener, he used to exhibit regularly at West End flower show and other local shows, and won many cups with his produce.
