Notes about Jacob Cardinaal

Hij was de stamvader van de Groningse tak van de familie. Zijn vrouw was een dochter van de
Doopsgezinde Groningse familie Hesselink. Jacob werd eerste penningmeester van de Societeit der
Doopsgezinden in Groningen. Deze was sinds 1825 opgericht. Het initiatief was uitgegaan van de
Societeit der Vlamingen. Hoofdoel was om de hoofdpunten van de Meemsterlandse societeit uit te
dragen. In de jaren 1834 en 1835 werd daar een fonds opgericht voor weduwen van leeraren van de
Societeit. De eerste directeuren van dit fonds werden Ds.K.Sybrandi en S.Gorter. Na het vertrek
van Sybrandi werd J.Hesselink uit Groningen benoemd. Jacob woonde in het Cardinaalshuis te
Groningen. De gevel van dit huis (dat oorspronkelijk in de Kiek int Jat straat te Groningen
stond) werd geplaats als gevel van de portiersloge van het Provinciehuis te Groningen. (Foto in
