Notes about Geertruida Gertrude Dengerink

She was said to be of the upper class in Holland and she never took to the new country. She faked alot of poor health. Her dau. Gertude took care of her the rest of her life after Henry died. (From C.D. 'Doc' Wichers)

1875 census shows her brother H. J. Dengerink, 23 years old, living and farming with the Van Leeuwen family near Dispatch, Kansas, having all come from New Jersey before that. Perhaps it was this brother that told them about Kansas, and why they moved there. The Van Leeuwen family was also from Zutphen, and also immigrated in 1871 to New Jersey.

After visiting Zutphen and Warnsveld in the Netherlands I can imagine coming from a big city then moving to Kansas to homestead and living in a dugout in the side of a hill would be quite a change. Dont know how upper class her family actually was, or if they just came from the city life. - Luke
