They got married on May 1, 1867 at Zutphen, Gelderland, Netherlands , he was 32 years old.Source 2
Child(ren):
From southeast part of the Netherlands. Came to America to Ellis Island. Settled in Patterson New Jersey with 2 boys in 1871 . Had 2 more boys in Patterson. In Patterson, he worked for the railroad until he hurt his left arm and was let go. He was injured by a beam in the RR workshop. The beam was dropped off a hoist and landed on his shoulders, and he was slightly crippled for the rest of his life. He came across by train to Solomon, KS, and then two wheeled cart to the area of Downs Kansas ~1875-1878 with their team of oxen Buck and Bright. Supposed to be a piece of the yoke they used in a musuem down in that area. He was (one of ??) the last homesteaders in the west (1878). They homesteaded 2 miles from Dispatch, KS. Had 2 girls in KS.
When Hendrik Wichers and Gertrude Dengerink immigrated in 1871, there were other relatives that came from the same place (near Zutphen) at or around the same time (1871), including Gertrudes brother Hendrick Jan John Dengerink, and Hendrik Wichers cousin (their mothers were sisters) Johanna Overdijking and her husband A.J. VanLeeuwen and their family. They all initially resided in New Jersey, but by 1875 (based on census records) the VanLeeuwens had moved to near Dispatch Kansas and so had John Dengerink who was living with them at that time. John Dengerink later married their daughter Willemken (Ida) VanLeeuwen.
Hendrik and Gertrudes daugher Gertie was born in New Jersey (Jan 1878), so their move to Dispatch Kansas was probably after that, sometime during 1878 or later, joining Gertrudes brother John and the VanLeeuwen family who had already been there for a few years.
Their initial house was a sod house dug in the side of a hill which the family stayed in while Henry John homesteaded their place on the other side of the river.
The following is recollection of a coversation that Eldon had with his father Henry John who was repeating what his Grandfather said. "The three brothers owned ships/shipping in Holland and were kicked out of Holland because they were cheating the government. The Wichers name is originally German and has a registered German coat of arms. It is said to mean "Well Dressed Gentleman" in German. The Wichers name supposedly got into Holland from Germany when a sailor jumped ship into
Holland centuries ago." Thus, Henry John was supposedly one of three brothers that came over from Holland together in 1871
this must be incorrect because this line of Wichers did not come from Germany.
From Wick Wichers we have --> Baker OAK HARBOR LETTER With wife owned bakery in city of Zutfen, Holland. In 1871- moved to Paterson, New Jersey, USA. In 1878- moved to Smith County, Kansas Emigrated with wife and 2 children 1871
