Notes about HEINRICH JOSEPH "Henri" BOLZ

After WW1 Germany had a enormous debt. The onley solution was to print money, much money. But this act had greet consequences: inflation.
The climax of the German inflation was in 1923. In 1921 cost 1 kg bread 4 Mark. In August 1923 was it 69.000 Mark and 3 month later, in November 1923 cost 1 kg bread 210.000.000.000 Mark. Bad times for the German people. No wonder that Heinrich wanted to go away and went to America in 1923. He arrived on Ellis Island on 26 october 1923 with SS Bayern from Hamburg. He was almost 19 years old. Before he was in contact with his uncle Severin Bolz, who immigrated in 1912. Severin lived in Chicago, 4316w Wrightwood Ave. Henri married in 1930. Still in de sixties he spokes German almost all the time with his wife and with her family. Their children didn't learn German. Henri was a hard worker and when he worked he could build almost anything. (He was machinist). He was also sheriff for the city of Chicago. He lost his jobs from drinking. He sometimes live in the streets of Chicago by his own choice. He always had a home to come to his wife and she would always take him back. She loved him all the time. His problem with alcohol (only one or two drinks maked him very sick) came probably from his illness the Gittelmannsyndrome. His brother Peter had the same problems and more people in de family have it. (not everybody have the alcohol problem, spasmodic and cramps belongs often to that illness). The children grow up in poor circumstances, but they always loves their father. Because of his problems it came never to a visit to his family in Germany. His mother in Germany (Elisabeth), a simple but a sweet lady, often asked herself how it was with Henry.
