Adriaan was onderwijzer te Grijpskerke (1876), daarna te Serooskerke (1880) en aansluitend te Aagtekerke (1884), waar hij eervol ontslag kreeg op 1-oktober 1887.
Eind februari 1888, na een moeizame winter, werd hij oefenaar te Amsterdam. Hij werd op 11-09-1889 officieel benoemd door de Classis Amsterdam en hij werd verbonden aan de doleantiekerk te Sloten. Op 15-9-1890 beeindigde hij zijn loopbaan als onderwijzer. In januari 1892 maakte hij zich los van de doleantiekerk en vormde hij te Sloten (bij Amsterdam) een vrije gemeente. Op 31 januari werd hij daar bevestigd als predikant. Eind 1892 vormde hij daar een vrije oud gereformeerde gemeente. In 1893 werd hij beroepen te kampen (door de Dordts gereformeerde gemeente). Op 1 oktober werd hij daar bevestigd (hij had toen 7 kinderen). In juni 1898 leidde hij samen met ds Roelofsen de begrafenis van ds Fransen te Barneveld. Op 2-11 1898 deed hij zijn intrede in Barneveld. In mei 1908 nam hij een beroep aan naar Terneuzen, waarna hij op 2 oktbober 1910 opnieuw te barneveld werd bevestigd. In 1915 nam hij een beroep aan naar Tholen, waar hij in 1920 overleed.
