    De ouders van Pieter zijn niet eact bekend. Zijn eerste levensteken stamt uit 1807, als hij als vondeling ingeschreven wordt in het vondelingenboek van het Aalmoezeniersweeshuis te Amsterdam: Maandag 3 Augustus 1807, 's avonds te 10 uuren gevonden: een jongetje out nagisatig? 3 jaar op de Prinsegragt bij de Leidsestraat. Zonder bericht. Pieter Mostert. Bij zijn overlijdensakte staan echter wel zijn ouders vermeld: Pieter Mostert en Grietje Naihuis. In Amsterdam blijkt omstreeks 1800 een Pieter Mostert gewoond te hebben, van beroep scheepstimmerman, ged. 14-4-1765 als zoon van Jan Mostert en Margrietje Pencier en overleden op 2-6-1839. De Pieter Mostert was getroud met Aaltje Vreedenburg (o.tr. 20-4-1798) en in 1839 meld hij in zijn testament dat hij geen kinderen heeft. Er is geen Grietje Naihuis te vinden in Amsterdam, maar wel een Grietje Neuhaus, geboren in 1778 of 1779 en overleden op 7-2-1848 (69 jaar). Deze Grietje Neuhaus was getrouwd met Theodorus Andreas Colenbrander (o.tr. 13-5-1803) en beviel in 1804 van haar eerste zoon: Peterus Johannes Colenbrander (traceerbaar).

    Doopaanvraag regenten Aalmoezeniersweeshuis, gedoopt in de Nieuwezijds Kapel te Amsterdam door pastoor Jacob Meinard Noothoven.
