Notes about Annie Belle Oliver

From Oliver Family History Obituary Mrs. A.B. McKENZIE June 18th 1971 Funeral services were held for Mrs. A.B. McKenzie, one of Biggar`s oldest and most prominent citizens, June 21, in St. Andrew`s Presbyterian church with Rev. Dr. Davidson officiating. Organist was Mrs. Don Back and soloist was Mrs. Marilyn Donahue. Pallbearers were Ed Beeson, Milton Jiricka, Delmar Newton, Perry Willis, Donald Black and Allan Dean. Mrs. McKenzie has been intimately identified with the development of music in Biggar in both district and provincial levels from 1919 to 1966. Her death was not unexpected having been semi-invalided in 1965 by a severe heart condition. She moved to Burnaby to live with her sister Mrs. A. Hewitt. For the remainder of her days, she was a lady of exceptional sympathetic kindness possessing a great devotion to her family and relations. Mrs. McKenzie was born in Battleford in 1885, being married there to Hugh McKenzie in 1903. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Callahan of Prince George and Mrs. Alice Hewitt of Coquitlam, B.C., one daughter, Mrs. Arnold Penner of Kingston, Jamaica, one son Minard of Burnaby; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mrs. McKenzie was the daughter of John Grieve Oliver, a building contractor, who built the parliament buildings at Battleford as it was the capital of the North West Territories, and the RNW Mounted Police barracks in 1883. Mrs. McKenzie settled in Biggar in 1919 after spending nine years in Scott subsequent to departing from Battleford. The following year her music teaching career commenced and students were prepared for dominion music exams. Many students were started on successful music careers from her studio including such notable performers as Deltra Eamon Kamsler, who as a member of the Roger Wagner Chorale, appeared in Carnegie Hall, New York. Also Milton Jirika who after two years finishing in Italy, appeared in the opera halls of Europe. Her enthusiasm and energies to propagate music were assisted by the general public for many adults as well as children showed interest to study and partake in music. Choral groups were formed to satisfy this interest and the reward was evident when Biggar won the provincial grand aggregate at the provincial music festival when Mrs. McKenzie was highly commended by famous British adjudicators. For over 30 years Mrs. McKenzie was organist and choir leader of Biggar Presbyterian Church, at the same time organizing public concerts to raise monies for world and local charities. From 1946 to 1948 she was president of the Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers Association where she displayed the same interest and applied leadership as in other activities. Interment was in Biggar Community Cemetery on Monday afternoon, June 21, beside her husband, Hugh, who predeceased her by eleven years.
