Notes about Elizabeth Penn

{geni:about_me} In 1634, '''Elizabeth Hammond''' and her children boarded the "Griffin", heading to Boston, MA. They landed on September 18, 1634.

Per Harry Ham, 1930 (family researcher). Noted by Diane Tatum, 7/1/2011
>”Hammond, Benjamin, Elizabeth (widow) and children Elisabeth, Martha, Rachel and Benjamin. From London, bound for Boston. Ref: Hamond Gen pg 565. 36 pg 109) from the source: http://www.packrat-pro.com/ships/griffin.htm

>Elizabeth Hammond, widow of William, with her son Benjamin and three daus., all young, left a good estate in London, and came over to New England in the troublesome times of 1634, from a desire to have the liberty to serve God according to the dictates of their consciences. They arrived in Boston, Sept. 18, 1634, in the ship Griffin, and had with them the Rev. John Lothrop, their minister. Mrs. Hammond lived in Boston and in Watertown, Mass. until the year 1638, when she joined Rev. John Lothrop's church in Scituate, April 16, 1638, being the 33rd member of said church.

>Mrs. Elizabeth (Penn) Hammond probably returned to Boston near the close of the year 1639, as she died and was buried there A.D. 1640."

*For a very full account of this record see "Genealogy o f the Family of Horatio Hammond," published 1876, pp 6-12. This is not the ELIZABETH PAINE (PAYNE) who was a wife of another William Hammond, As stated by Roland Hammond in his Hammond Genealogy, 1876, i.e.: NEHGR Vol 149, July 1995 (Whole #595): has two articles about Hammond and Hammon. On page 218 there is mention of Roland Hammond: "Elnathan Hammond added a note to his Hammond family records in 1772 reflecting his having obtained a copy of Ezra Stiles' transcription of Lothrop's records. In it he mistakenly assumes that the Elizabeth Hammond admitted to Lothrop's church on April 16, 1638 [sic] was his great grandmother. These errors of date and identity were repeated by Roland Hammond. In fact, the Elizabeth Hammond whom Lothrop called sister was, at least loosely speaking, his sister-in-law, the daughter of the aforementioned William of Watertown and his wife, Elizabeth (Paine) Hammond." Note here that Roland's accuracy is called into doubt, and that apparently Elizabeth Penn and Elizabeth Paine are different people. Some of the data obtained from Roland Hammond is supported in this article. On page 218 Benjamin (1) of Sandwich is the son of William of London and Elizabeth (Penn) Hammond, who immigrated (after William's death) to Massachusetts with her three daughters and a son Benjamin born 1621.

Alternatively said to have been the Admiral's cousin, daughter of his uncle George.
