{geni:about_me} HAMMAND, or as often written, HAMMONS: --
Benjamin Hammond, of Yarmouth 1643, by Farmer said to have come from London, and to be son of William and Elizabeth, a sister of William Penn, but his could not be the celebrated William. Farmer adds that he was at Sandwich, married in 1650, and removed to Rochester, where lived John, called his 2d son, born 1663. [1]

--------------------
(+)-1. Benjamin2 Hammond, son of William and Elizabeth, went to Sandwich, and there in 1650 married Mary Vincent, dau. of John Vincent, who was born in England in 1633. Nothing is known as to his whereabouts from his arrival in Boston, in 1634, to his marriage to Mary Vincent in 1650, except that he was at Yarmouth in 1643. Benjamin Hammond and Mary Vincent had issue, as follows:

*1. Samuel, b. in 1655. d.
*2. John, b. Nov. 30, 1663. d. Apr. 19, 1749, O. S.
*3. Nathan, b. in 1670. d.
*4. Benjamin, 2d, b. Nov. 1673. d. March 29, 1747.
*5. Rose, b. d. Nov. 20, 1676.
*6. Mary, b. d. young.

Samuel Hammond and his brother John probably came from Sandwich to Rochester, Mass., about 1680. Benjamin Hammond with his wife and two sons, Nathan and Benjamin 2d, probably came to Rochester about 1684. Benjamin died there in 1703, ‘. 82; and Mary, his widow, in 1705, ‘. 72.

Benjamin Hammond, with his mother Elizabeth Hammond, a widow, and sisters, Elizabeth, Martha, and Rachel, came to America in company with Rev. John
Lothrop, in the ship "Griffin," landing in Boston September 18, 1634.
Elizabeth Penn, wife of William Hammond, is said to have been a daughter of
Sir William Penn, and Aunt to William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, but
this does not prove out with the Penn Genealogy. It is possible that her name
was Elizabeth Penn, as there exists no reason to doubt the general accuracy of
the record kept by Capt. Elnathan Hammond of Newport, R.I., born
March 7, 1703; died May 24, 1793, a part of which was copied from family
records kept by his father, John Hammond, whowas born at Sandwich, Mass.
Nov. 30, 1663 and died in Rochester, Mass., April 19, 1749, son of Benjamin and Mary (Vincent) Hammond.
Rev. John Lothrop established his church at Scituate, Mass., but soon
after moved to Barnstable, Mass. It is possible that Benjamin Hammond went
with him as he is found in the adjoining town of Yarmouth, Mass. in 1643.

Benjamin Hammond was able to bear arms in Yarmouth in 1643.

October 2, 1650, Benjamin Hammond was the complainant in a case for slander, in Yarmouth.

Benjamin Hammond was the own cousin of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, his mother Elizabeth, the widow of William Hammond of London, being the daughter of Admiral, Sir William
Penn.

The first settlers at Mattapoisett were probably Samuel Hammond (one of the proprietors) and John, his borther, who came from Sandwich in 1680 and settled in the south-west part of the town. Both wre men of wealth and influence.Samuel Hammond was one of the founders of the First Church of Rochester. His land on West Neck was bought from Hugh Cole of Swanzey, who was the first white owner, but Samuel Hammond probably the first English occupant.

Place of death has been claimed as "Rochester", MA, but no such place exists. Worcester is a strong possibility.
