Notes about WILLIAM BALDWIN

According to the will of Richard Stevens of Seal, yeoman (Sep 1677) a William Baldwyn late of Plaxtol, maltster, had agreed on 29th May 1675 to pay £30 to whoever was designated in Richard Stevens' will. This could be William's father (unless "late" means "recently", in which case, it could be his son, who moved to Ightham and then Newington) Buried at Wrotham in the same tomb as his wife. In his will he names three sons, William (eldest), Thomas and Robert. The inventory was of a large premises (including a 'shop') and had a total value of £222.1s.11d

LAST WILL & TESTAMENT William Baldwin 11 April 1692
In the name of God Amen the eleventh day of Aprill in the year of our Lord God one thousand six hundred ninety and two 1692 I William Baldwin of Plaxtol in the parish of Wrotham in the county of Kent Maltster being att this tyme sicke and weake in body but in sound & perfect minde & memory for which I praise God doe therefore make this my last will and testament (revoking all former wills by me heretofore made) And this only to be my last Will and noe other in manner and forme following First and principally I will and resigne my soule into the hands and gracious acceptance of Almighty god my maker hopeing and stedfastly believing to have the pardon & remission of all my sins and eternall salvation by the only meritts death and passion of his dearly beloved son Jesus Christ my alone saviour & redeemer And my body I committ to the earth in decent & christian manner to be buried in Wrotham Churchyard under the same stone which my deare wife lyeth buried under att the discretion of mine executor hereafter named And as concerning that temporall estate which God in mercie hath sent me here on earth I will and dispose of the same in manner & form following that is to say

I will & give unto the poore people of Haleborrow in the parish of Wrotham aforesaid the summe of ten shillings to be paid to them within short tyme after my decease Also I will & give unto Nicholas Swann my servant twenty shillings Also I will & give unto William Dane my servant boy the like summe of twenty shillings to be given to them within one year next after my decease by my Executor

Also I will & give unto Thomas Baldwin my son the sume of twenty pounds of current English money on this condicon that is the said Thomas Baldwin doe suffer mine executor to take up & carry away att his pleasure the furnace & kettle & the sider mill & malt mill standing in and upon the premisses wherein I now live, then to be paid to him within one year next after my decease (and not other wise) by my Executor

ITEM I will & give unto Robert Baldwin my son all that messuage or tenement att Horsnayles Crouch in Wrotham aforesaid together with the barne stable outhouses edifices & buildings orchards gardens closes & backsides thereunto belonging with the appurtenances And also all those severall peeces or parcells of land arrable meadow & pasture thereunto now used & belonging All w[hi]ch premisses are situate lying & being in the parish of Wrotham aforesaid & now in the tenure or occupacion of Richard Olliver or his assignes & lately purchased of Richard Browne & Thomas Johnson to hold to the same Robert Baldwin my son and to his heires for ever paying out of it unto William Baldwin my eldest son the summe of forty pounds of current English money to be paid to him within one yeare next after my decease

And further I will & give unto my three sons William Thomas & Robert equally between them all my brasse & pewter (except the ffurnace & ketle before mentioned) and all the lynnen lying & being in a long plain chest standing over the hall equally to be devided between them And also I doe make the said Robert Baldwin my son full & whole Executor of this my Testament & Last Will And to enable him to pay my debts & legacies I give and leave unto him all the rest and residue of my goods chattells cattell debts household stuffe & personall estate whatsoever (except the leaden sisterns in the malthouse) to see my body decently buried my debts & legacies paid and this my Will proved & performed in every respect
