Anshar, "le ciel entier " est le père d'Anu et il est le fils de Tiamat et Apsu. Parfois on le dit le fils de Lahmu et Lahamu, Il est souvent associé à Kishar qui est à la fois sa soeur et son épouse et ses attributs sont assimilées avec ceux d'Ashur.
Quand Ea eut connaissance de la guerre projetée par Tiamat, Anshar essaya de lancer l'attaque le premier, mais il fut repoussé. Il se tourna alors vers Anu qu'il envoya avec une mission de paix vers Tiamat, mais Anu en revint bredouille.
L'assemblée des dieux fut convoquée et Mardouk fit la promesse de livrer le corps vaincu de Tiamat aux pieds d'Anshar. En retour il exigea des dieux la promesse que l'on lui donnerait le royaume divin après sa victoire.
